Learning Through Play with Bubblegum Devices

The decision about whether to get a learning device for your child, at what age and what kind, is a topic of much debate. Allegra attends school full day with no technology and has very limited screen time at home. However, since around the time she turned 2 she started becoming more interested in my phone and in watching children’s shows and playing games. This was becoming a problem as I needed my phone for work, and I was also concerned about not having the necessary parental controls on my device. After doing some research, I decided to get a Bubblegum Tablet (specifically the 10” tablet). There were several reasons for this decision. The main motivator to get her a device is that we are planning our first family overseas holiday next month and I’m already stressing about how to keep her calm and occupied on the plane. My niece has a Bubblegum tablet which she absolutely loves. When she accidentally cracked the screen and was devastated, the company easily repaired it at their store in Cape Town. So, the fact that it’s locally supplied by a proudly South African company, who can also handle queries and repairs, was a big deciding factor. I also wanted something that was designed for children but could be used by adults as well, since we don’t currently have a functioning tablet in our home.

When the box arrived (very soon after I ordered it), I decided to explore the device before introducing Allegra to it.

The set up was easy. It comes with a soft cover that’s easy to hold for little hands and also has a stand which will be perfect for the plane ride. We had an option of bright pink or blue - we chose pink as it’s Allegra’s favourite colour at the moment. I also got the Bluetooth headphones which Allegra hasn’t used yet but will definitely use during our travels.

The device is Android, which makes it easy to use. It comes with pre-loaded apps, including several children’s educational games and activities. You can also download apps like YouTube Kids and Netflix, amongst others. The 32GB Storage Memory means we can download some series for offline viewing - again perfect for the plane ride. The pre-loaded iWawa Home app is aimed at increasing security, creating healthy content and allows for easier management of the device. The App allows for easier play time management and creation of a safe play space for your child.

Another huge plus is that this tablet is affordable, especially considering everything it offers. The idea of spending thousands on a device for a small child was not too appealing. That being said I wanted to go with a trusted brand and product, as one can become completely overwhelmed with the choices online.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Bubblegum Tablet and other products. I feel confident in my decision and happy about introducing it to my child. I think it will bring us both many moments of fun and learning.

Bubblegum devices are available online from the Bubblegum website, as well as at ToysRUs, ToyKingdom, Makro, Hi-Online and with a unique bundle as a device and headphone option.

If you would like to get one of these for your kids (or yourself), they are running a promotion at the moment, with an online Afrikaans word game, where you can win a voucher of up to R450 off your purchase! This comes following the launch of the Afrikaans edition of the Bubblegum Tablet. The game is also super fun for the whole family so check it out. https://bubblegumtablets.co.za
